So-called hard, i.e. calciferous, water is the result of soft rainwater seeping through mineral-rich rock formations. The minerals calcium and magnesium carbonate leach into the water, which is thus "hardened". This hard water eventually becomes our tap water. Limescale deposits form when the tap water is heated or evaporates.
Limescale deposits are dissolved by the acid components in the decalcifier. You can judge the intensity of this chemical reaction by the vigour of the bubbling action.
The effectiveness of a decalcifier at limescale removal is primarily dependent on its acid component. The ideal decalcifier ensures quick and thorough decalcification combined with optimum protection of the materials, if adequately dosed.
Many people believe that vinegar is the best limescale remover. However, using a citric acid-based decalcifier may cause precipitation and thus deposits that can prevent your household appliances from functioning properly, for example by clogging the fine lines and valves in coffee machines. The citric acid can also create an insoluble film that seals off the limescale deposits. Moreover, the decalcification process will take significantly longer with citric acid than with durgol®.
The acetic acid and flavour additives in vinegar or vinegar essence produce an unpleasant odour during decalcification. A further problem is that the odour can be absorbed into plastic materials, an unwelcome side effect especially in food-related applications. Furthermore, certain plastics can be damaged by acetic acid. As with citric acid, decalcification takes significantly longer with vinegar than with durgol®.
Thanks to its above-average limescale-dissolving action, durgol® universal is economical to use and the low dosage means it is gentle on the environment.
durgol® universal is environmentally compatible: during the reaction of the acid contained in the decalcifier with the limescale, the acid is neutralised via the formation of salts. Additionally, any unused acid helps neutralise the often excessive concentrations of lye (from laundry detergents) in waste water.
The durgol® universal bottle is made of environment-friendly and recyclable PET.
durgol® universal is a multi-purpose decalcifier that can basically be used on all household items to remove limescale. You can certainly use durgol® universal for (open-system) filter coffee machines. However, durgol® swiss espresso® was developed especially for modern premium (closed-system) coffee machines. The limescale deposits are dissolved during the run through, in which foaming must be kept at a minimum to prevent excessive pressure from building up in the fine lines and valves. durgol® swiss espresso® with its special care and protection formula is ideally formulated to meet these requirements and thus helps extend the life span of your coffee machine.
